Dos and Don'ts After Getting a Dental Filling.
Protecting your dental fillings prevents the need for further dental intervention and saves you time and money. Following these simple guidelines will help your filling last longer and keep your smile healthy.
Do This After a Dental Filling
Maintain good oral health habits. Brush and floss with a soft-bristle brush.
Eat soft foods. Foods such as eggs, yogurt, and soup won’t bother the filling.
Try to chew on the side opposite the filling. Give the treated tooth time to adjust and settle.
Drink plenty of water. This helps prevent food and bacteria particles from building up.
Take an over-the-counter pain medication if needed. Ibuprofen or Tylenol can help if you are experiencing pain after the procedure.
Follow your dentist’s instructions. Your dentist knows what’s best for your specific treatment.
Don’t Do This After a Dental Filling
Don’t eat sticky, crunchy, or hard foods. Candy, nuts, and raw vegetables can damage the newly placed filling.
Don’t eat anything too hot or cold. The tooth with the filling may be sensitive.
Don’t eat right after. Your mouth may still be numb, so it is best to wait 2 hours before consuming food.
Don’t grind your teeth. This can put stress on the filling and even chip the tooth.
Don’t ignore discomfort. If the new filling causes pain or intense discomfort, please notify your dentist.
